Day 1

Day one began rather early heading into the Naval Base at Garden Island where we had to undergo our final scrutineering before departure.
An early arrival assured us of a relatively early departure.
It was great having a group of friends there to cheers us on our way. I think that we are still a little daunted by the fact that this journey will be taking us to Darwin.
We headed out of the city up inot the crisp mountain air. Our first pitstop was The Hydro Majestic which is now closed to the public.
It was then onto a small town called Portland. Here we all gatherd in the park to meet the locals.
You are driving along and there are pockets of people cheersing us on. we are so glad that Dave fitted a air horn to Candy and that Marty was able to wire it in. We certainly have used it heaps today. We also cheer our fellow bashers on with a friendly blast.
Lunch was bathurst so Candy did two trips around Mt Panorama - probably maxing 20 miles per hour.
Had lunch and then hit more dirt road.
Brenda skilfully guided Candy through the rough stuff - we even impressed a few of the boys - even the ones that were knocking us at the scrutineering.
Our fist water hole was eventful. The Navy boys must have been off the Pasha Baulka and ran aground. The Ute following did the manly thing and flew through only to stop on the opposite bank.
With plently of varying advice Candy cruised on thorugh and up the other side. We even stopped ot offer the Navy Boys soem help. They have our number if they get stuck again.
After tea we had to modify Candy's back wheel arches as they tyres were scrubbing in the rough. Bill and Ben got our their hammers and went to work.
It has been a great day visitng places that we would never think of going to, everyone is really friendly

Have a blast Rob and Brenda. Go Girls! You are going to love travelling through some awesome Aussie country on the way to Darwin, and the people you meet will change your lives. Can't wait to hear the stories when you get back. Hey Rob - we should do a full chapel on this - pics, stories etc so the kids can celebrate with you. Let me know what Friday is good for you - I'll bump whoever is listed for that day. Mel

Hi Miss Cockburn,

I have just gotten on to this blog account thing and it is really exciting! All our class has been talking about you every day. We looked at the pictures on the blog page and it looked funny. The class really wants to come with you but we can't by the way have you hit any Kangaroos?
